Why Paper Stock Matters

The paper you select influences how your materials feel in the hand, how colors and images appear, and how durable your final product will be. Coated stocks provide smoother surfaces that enhance image sharpness and color vibrancy, while uncoated stocks deliver a more natural, writable finish with a softer appearance. Specialized stocks like recycled or textured papers can support sustainability goals or elevate the tactile experience of your print materials.

Whether you are printing books or catalogs, we can help you choose the right paper stock for your project’s purpose, desired appearance, and budget.

Paper Weight Basics

What the numbers mean

  • GSM: weight in grams per square meter (consistent global standard).
  • Lbs: basis weight in pounds for 500 sheets at a paper’s basic size

Heavier paper feels thicker and stronger

  • Feels more substantial in hand
  • Reduces show-through of text or images
  • Often lasts longer with frequent handling

Lighter paper keeps costs down

  • Cheaper to produce and ship
  • Easier to turn pages in large books
  • Works well for novels and high-volume text content

Typical Paper Weights for Books

Book interior pages:

  • Light text books: ~60–90 GSM (~35–55 lb text)
  • Standard trade paperback: ~80–100 GSM (~55–70 lb text)
  • Most book papers are in the 60–120 GSM range to balance readability, cost, and durability

Thicker stocks for covers or premium books:

  • Heavier paper (120–170+ GSM) for covers or art books
  • Very heavy paper is often used for special features, cards, or packaging elements
  • Readability: Lower weights can be easier to read in long books because the paper is thinner and the book stays lighter.
  • Thickness & feel: A higher GSM or higher lb stock feels more robust and can improve the perceived quality of your product.
  • Cost: Heavier stocks cost more for both materials and shipping. Lighter stocks help you stay on budget without overbuilding the book unless needed.

Finish Types

Paper finishes describe the surface treatment or coating on paper that changes how it looks and feels. A gloss finish gives a shiny, reflective surface that makes colors appear more vibrant and images pop, which is great for marketing materials, photos, and anything that needs visual impact. A matte finish has a non-reflective, soft surface that reduces glare and fingerprints while improving readability and giving a more refined, elegant look. Between these two, satin or silk finishes offer a moderate sheen that balances vibrancy with readability. Uncoated paper has no surface coating, giving it a natural feel that is easy to write on and ideal for letterheads, text-heavy books, or stationery. Choosing the right finish affects how easy your content is to read, how durable and premium your piece feels, and how colors and details come through in the final print.
